Here is a list of adaptive tai chi classes that we teach or that we have found.

Free Adaptive Tai Chi Class for Veterans

Non-wheelchair and Wheelchair users
Family Members also Welcome
Classes are conducted by Dr. John Johnson, Mrs. Danielle Lauber, CTRS and Mrs. Sharon Stephens, CTRS at the Tennessee Valley VA Healthcare System. Funded by a U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs adaptive sports grant, this ongoing class is developed for area veterans who have ambulatory disability and their family members.

There is no cost to participate in this class. A practice DVD and a written manual will also be provided for participants free of charge.

When: Thursdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

This program is a newly developed form of adaptive sports. Developed by Dr. Zibin Guo, this form of wheelchair Tai Chi Chuan integrates wheelchair motion (the rolling and turning of the chair) with the dynamic, gentle and flowing Tai Chi Chuan movements making it an ideal form of mind & body fitness program.

When: Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m.Eastern Time; and Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. Eastern Time

Siskin Health and Fitness Center
Seated Tai Chi
This class was specifically designed for people who:
  • Are unable to move their legs
  • Spend most of their day in a wheelchair
  • Have recently fallen
  • Experience frequent falls

Adaptive Tai Chi Class

For those with ambulatory issues.
Classes are conducted by David E. Prestridge at Siskin Hospital for Physical Rehabilitation's Health and Fitness Center. The class includes Qigong warm up and a modified version of “Cloudy Hands.”

When: Third Thursday of each month

Adaptive Tai Chi Class

Standifer Place Assisted Living
A 45 minute class conducted by David E. Prestridge that takes place on the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays of each month. It consists of Qigong warm up, instruction in a modified four form, a seated form of “standing pole”, selected moves from Eight Brocade Qigong, and education on the benefits of regular practice of TaiJi and Qigong.

When: 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month

A 45 minute class conducted by David E. Prestridge that takes place on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Adaptive Tai Chi Class for Rehab

Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehabilitation Patients
An Adaptive Tai Chi class is being offered to cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation patients through Erlanger’s Rehabilitation and Wellness Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The class is offered once a week for 45 minutes to those who have met the goals of their rehabilitation program. This early afternoon class offers a series of progressive moves that can be done seated, standing, or moving. When needed, adaptations to the movements are offered, so that individuals participate to their best ability. Karen Wilson, a certified instructor of the Chattanooga Tai Ji Community is currently teaching this class.

When: Tuesdays 1:15 to 2:00 p.m.
